The Apne Film Club is reviving the Asian cinema clubs that were found wherever migrated populations settled in UK in the 60’s and 70’s.
A hall or cinema was hired, reels were brought in (or VHS later) and everyone would come together to spend a day watching a classic or the latest Hindi cinema. With samosa and chai flowing, and talking throughout the picture, it was as a much a space to build community and connect to a sense of home as it was to just simply watch a film.
In 2019 we hosted our first cinema club as part of LLF 2019 with a screening of the absolute 1957 classic, Guru Dutt’s ‘Pyaasa’ – it was packed with all ages and the film drew jeers, tears and cheers at all the right moments.
The Apne Film Club is a project by artist Hassan Vawda.
