What is an intertitle? Today we take sound in film and TV for granted, but, as we know in the early beginnings movies had no sound. So- text was incorporated into many films in the absence of sound and these were known as ‘intertitles’. These could be: hand-painted, written, photographs or other and were then edited into movies to help audiences understand plot, characters, dialogue or narrative. Sometimes intertitles were even read aloud by a presenter in the picture house!

Whilst Alfred Hitchcock’s association with Leytonstone is well known. Interestingly, before his directing career took off, his introduction to the industry began with the making of film ‘intertitles’ used in silent movies before the technology existed to include sound in film.
